Stress is a normal part of life and can often mean there are positive things happening in our lives.  Understanding why you feel the way you do — and what to do about it — is important.  Stress is the body’s physical response to a real or perceived threat, demand, or danger. Your body releases stress hormones which prepare the body to respond. This is called the “fight or flight” response.  In short bursts the stress response is helpful for us to meet the demands placed on us and take action.  Too much stress and for too long can have negative consequences on our emotional wellbeing, performance and the way we relate to others.

Make Time To Meditate

Meditation is by far one of the most beneficial stress relievers for the mind and body. There are lots of different types of meditation. You could use a mantra which is a short affirmation. You could focus on your breathing by taking slow deliberate breaths. You could try mindfulness by paying attention to what you see, smell, hear, and feel.

Eat A Balanced Diet

When we are stressed, we may be likely to comfort eat. Foods high in sugar provide relief from short-term stress, but only add to the pile of long-term stress. The fall of blood sugar after over-indulging can result in an increase of stress. A healthy diet comes with many benefits, including a healthy mind and outlook on life.

Make Time For The Things You Love

Connect with activities that give you joy and are meaningful. However, make sure you are paying attention to what you are doing and not worrying about that stressful thing in your life.

Make Time To Exercise

Even a brisk half an hour walk is great to reduce stress. If you can’t find half an hour 10 mins is better than nothing! Exercise releases endorphins, which are feel-good hormones that naturally make us feel happier.

Identify What’s Not Helpful for You

There may be many things within your control that are actually adding to the stress you feel. Excessive use of technology and social media is a good example, as is excessive consumption of alcohol and caffeine. Perhaps even some of the people you have in your life are causing you stress. Altering some of your daily habits can have a very positive effect on stress.

Express Your Creativity

Allowing yourself to be creative and courageous is a fun and extremely helpful way to relieve stress. Dance in front of your mirror, paint something, get an adult colouring-in book, take up something crafty. There are lots of fun ways to feel better.

Embrace The Ones You Love

Hugging someone you love can do you both a world of good. Hormones are released when we hug someone we love, even to the point that they can regulate blood pressure levels. Take the time to enjoy a good hug with someone you love and feel the stress melt away.
